The 5-day masterclass that turns HR managers into boardroom contributors
Organisations across South Africa and the broader African continent are rethinking the role of human resource, moving away from a purely administrative function toward a model where human resources professionals contribute directly to business strategy and organisational performance. As this transition accelerates, HR managers and business partners face growing pressure to demonstrate strategic value, influence executive decision-making, and align people practices with measurable business outcomes.
At Vumilia Africa Group, we recognise the weight of this expectation. We have worked with organisations across multiple industries, and we have seen first-hand the difference that well-equipped HR professionals can make when they move beyond operational tasks and into a genuine business partnership role. This masterclass was designed to support that transition.
“The organisations that will thrive in the coming decade are the ones that position HR as a strategic driver of growth, not a back-office function.”
Understanding the HR business partner role
The HR Business Partner, or HRBP, model was introduced to bridge the gap between traditional HR functions and the strategic needs of the business. In practice, this means that HR professionals are expected to understand the financial, operational, and competitive landscape of their organisations well enough to advise senior leadership on workforce planning, organisational design, talent strategy, and change management.
However, many HR professionals find themselves caught between the demands of day-to-day operations and the expectation to operate at a strategic level. They are asked to contribute to boardroom conversations without always having the frameworks, tools, or language to do so effectively. This masterclass addresses that gap directly.
What is covered in the Masterclass
Our HR Business Partnership Masterclass is a focused, practical programme designed to equip HR professionals with the knowledge and tools they need to operate confidently at a strategic level. The content is structured around the core competencies that we have found, that make an effective HR business partner. Here is a quick breakdown on what participants will gain from this masterclass series.
PART 1 : STRATEGIC HRBP POSITIONING
On the first day of the HRBP Masterclass, we will show participants how to identify and have a clear understanding of where the HR function currently sits within their organisation. This will give participants the knowledge they need to be able to structure strategic input on where it should be. With assessing this gap between perception and impact, participants become best positioned to examine common barriers to strategic positioning, and begin developing a personal action plan for repositioning themselves as a strategic contributor.
The day includes a self-assessment framework and a stakeholder mapping exercise that will help participants practically put this into action. This first day will set the foundation for the HR Business Partnership Masterclass series.
PART 2 : BUSINESS ACUMEN AND FINANCIAL FLUENCY
For the second part of the Masterclass, we will introduce participants to the financial literacy required to engage confidently in executive-level discussions.
Topics include:
- Reading and interpreting financial statements.
- Understanding the cost of turnover and absenteeism.
- Calculating the return on investment for HR initiatives.
- Presenting workforce data in a format that resonates with non-HR leaders.
Participants will get practical exercises where they build a business case for an HR initiative. This exercise will arm participants with the necessary knowledge and resources to build effective strategies that align with the organisation’s financial direction.
PART 3 : ORGANISATIONAL DESIGN AND CHANGE LEADERSHIP
The final part brings everything together. Participants will work through organisational design frameworks, change management models, and stakeholder influence strategies. The emphasis is on how participants apply themselves confidently, with a complete readiness toolkit and a draft HR Business Partnership action plan tailored to their organisation. To close the masterclass series, we will leave participants with these key skills to keep the momentum after the masterclass:
-
- How to secure executive sponsorship for initiatives.
- How to measure strategy progress over time.
